7,000 Mangroves Planted in Village in North Sulawesi to Restore Marine Life

TheIndonesia.id - The VIII Main Base of the Indonesian Navy (Lantamal VIII) in Manado, North Sulawesi, will plant about 7,000 mangrove tress in Maen village, North Minahasa, in an effort to restore marine life and enhance tourism potential in the area.

Commander of Lantamal VII Manado First Admiral Nouldy J Tangka said environmental protection is one the unit’s focuses, and planting the mangroves showed their commitment to the issue.

“From an economic perspective, [the village] can become a tourist destination that improves the livelihood of the locals,” Tangka explained, adding that mangrove ecosystem also provides other key benefits, including abrasion prevention and as the habitat to various marine biotas.

The Navy Base collaborated with the local office of state-owned electricity company PT PLN, North Minahasa local government, and members of the public in mangrove planting activity.

It was initiated by the Navy unit with PLN for North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, and Gorontalo regions, and the main objective is to assist the locals in finding solutions to the frequent abrasion in their area.

The planting process would be done in two stages and is expected to be completed in two weeks.
