TheIndonesia.id - Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko said Indonesia was in a neutral position and did not side with any party regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Moeldoko admits that Indonesia is in a difficult position in this regard.

In addition to adhering to the principle of free and active foreign policy, Indonesia also has a moral responsibility as the holder of the G20 Presidency not to take political sides with any country, said Moeldoko when receiving a visit from the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Piket at the Bina Graha Building, Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, Friday, April 22, 2022.

"Indonesia is faced with a difficult situation to support Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia, because as the G20 Presidency, Indonesia must embrace all member countries fairly. Indonesia does not side with anyone in this conflict," he said.

Indonesia remains in a position to support peace and oppose all forms of violence by anyone. However, he regretted the war escalation between Russia and Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Vincent Piket met Moeldoko to discuss the European countries concerns regarding the global uncertainty in the economic and security sectors triggered by the war between Russia and Ukraine. "The European Union asks Indonesia to use its influence as the G20 Presidency to put pressure on Russia to stop the war in Ukraine, because sanctions are one of the keys that can affect the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine war. Sanctions can open up opportunities for negotiations," said Piket.

Responding to this, Moeldoko said Indonesia would take note of all the concerns. He also appreciated the global call and attention of partner countries to Indonesia. This indicates that Indonesia has played a significant role and influence on the world stage, said Moeldoko.
