TheIndonesia.id - The Indonesian government has reaffirmed that it will implement travel bubble mechanism during MotoGP Mandalika in West Nusa Tenggara in March, after Dorna Sports CEO protested Indonesia’s mandatory quarantine.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said the international event must continue, but travel bubble mechanism that will be implemented to racers and officials is not to be questioned.

“There will be no special treatment for racers, crew, or officials that will participate in the world’s most prestigious bike race,” Uno said in a statement on Thursday, January 20, as reported by Antara.

Previously, CEO of Dorna Sports, which is MotoGP’s commercial rights holder, Carmelo Ezpelata expressed his disapproval over the mandatory quarantine in Indonesia for the race’s participants and crew.

Uno said the travel bubble will be prepared and implemented carefully because it’s an important measure in ensuring the event doesn’t become a COVID-19 super spreader. Moreover, this won’t be the first time Indonesia implements the system, as similar travel bubble was also adopted during the World Superbike (WSBK) in Mandalika in November last year.

“This is an instruction from President Joko Widodo. I believe everyone will cooperate to prepare and ensure this MotoGP event become a signal that we’re ready to hold international event, including G20 Summit and other conferences,” he explained.

The event organizers are also working closely with the Ministry of Health and the COVID-19 Task Force to strengthen COVID-19 preventive measures during the event and its preparation.

Lastly, he also revealed that the event is expected to trigger local economic growth, mirroring WSBK that saw 20 to 25 percent increase in economic activities.
